Upminster Old Chapel

Upminster Old Chapel Project

The realisation of a project started in 2005 in Upminster, Essex has completed thanks to a Heritage Lottery Grant amounting to £670,800 from the Heritage Lottery Fund as well as partnership funding in excess of £390,000.

Upminster Old Chapel is owned by the neighbouring school, Sacred Heart of Mary Girls’ School/Upminster Convent Parents’, Teachers’ and Friends’ Association and has been on English Heritage’s At Risk Register since 1991.

The Old Chapel has been completely restored to create a vital local asset providing space for performances, exhibitions, community meetings, outreach events and worship as well as a permanent exhibition of history of Upminster and the Chapel itself.

The Clarkson Alliance oversaw the £1million heritage project which completed in March 2013.

Stuart Beck, Assistant Head of the School and Project Director said “We were initially unsure of how introducing a technical project manager to an established project team would work but Julian has great communication and diplomacy skills and the team has quickly become integrated. There is no need to explain things twice to him.

The new facilities of the renovated Chapel will increase people’s use and appreciation of the building and the local heritage of the London Borough of Havering. It will provide a rich source of education opportunities for the community and visitors. It will cement and add a unique dimension to the School’s already active role in the local community”
