The Clarkson Alliance has helped put Oxford Brookes University’s School of Technology and its Motor Sports Academy ahead of the pack with an £8 million building that speeds students to a career in automotive design.

The university had wanted to replace an old teaching building that was poorly insulated and did not have enough useful space, with something more modern. But TCA sat down with the dean, Dr Denise Morrey, to find out how the new building could actually help the university achieve its objectives of raising the status of the university, attracting a higher standard of student, and cutting the time it took to get graduates into a job. The solution was a facility in which students could design, build and test automotive technology all in one place. More like a cutting-edge factory than a traditional college building, the new facility has helped put the University streets ahead of its competition.

By going back to basics, TCA helped attract funds and build a facility that not only provides an exciting and attractive learning environment but is also eco-friendly, earning a BREEAM rating of very good. Dean Morray has since described TCA’s ‘skills, both in terms of construction management, but also in terms of interfacing with the people involved,’ as ‘excellent’. We call that a win.
